In a recent interview, Laura Dern shared her appreciation for her co-star Liam Hemsworth, applauding his professionalism and supportive nature while filming intimate scenes for their new Netflix movie "Lonely Planet".
Dern, 57, expressed how fortunate she felt to work with Hemsworth, 34, who she described as “the safest person” to collaborate with, particularly during sensitive scenes. She noted that his openness and communication made the process much easier and more comfortable.
“We really developed a strong connection,” Dern explained in an interview with "People" magazine. "By the time we shot those scenes, we were able to talk openly and figure out how to make everything work both creatively and professionally."”
Additionally, Dern credited the presence of an intimacy coordinator, who played an essential role in ensuring the actors felt safe and supported during the more intimate scenes. “We had a lot of support and many discussions throughout,” she continued, emphasizing the importance of clear communication throughout the process.
The intimacy coordinator’s role involves choreographing intimate scenes such as kissing or simulated sex, and ensuring that actors are comfortable with the actions, boundaries, and rehearsals. They work closely with the cast, crew, and production team to maintain a safe environment for all involved.
Dern also reflected on how the film industry has evolved to create safer environments for actors. She mentioned how incredible it is to see how actors can now voice their boundaries freely, without fear of backlash or losing their jobs. “It’s amazing how much things have changed, where everyone can now comfortably set boundaries,” she said.
Having worked in Hollywood for many years, Dern acknowledged that her previous experiences were different from the more inclusive practices seen in today’s filmmaking world.
Dern, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2020 for her role in "Marriage Story", has received critical acclaim throughout her career, including multiple Oscar nominations. Hemsworth, known for his portrayal of Gale Hawthorne in "The Hunger Games" series, plays the younger man in "Lonely Planet", a film about a newly single novelist (Dern) who forms an unexpected connection with a man questioning his life choices.
